Ladybeard
Vocalist, Babybeard
If you’ve ever stumbled across a muscular, bearded Australian man rocking frilly Lolita dresses, twin-tails, and screaming heavy metal vocals over energetic J-pop beats, you’ve witnessed the global phenomenon known as Ladybeard.
Born Richard Magarey in Adelaide, Australia, Ladybeard is a multi-talented performer who has built a massive international following as a stunt actor, professional wrestler, and the undisputed king of "Kawaii Metal"—a chaotic yet joyful fusion of cute Japanese idol aesthetics and brutal death-metal growls.
The Genesis of the Persona
Magarey began his career as a martial artist and stuntman in Australia before moving to Hong Kong to pursue film work. While there, he dipped his toes into professional wrestling and randomly decided to wear a dress into the ring for a match. The crowd went wild for the striking visual contrast between his rugged, muscular build and the delicate clothing. Realizing he was onto something special, the "Ladybeard" persona was officially born.
In 2013, he relocated to Tokyo, Japan, where his unique blend of cross-dressing and high-energy showmanship perfectly aligned with the country's subculture scenes.
Viral Success and Musical Projects
Ladybeard’s popularity exploded globally in 2015 when he formed the musical group LADYBABY alongside two Japanese teenage idols. Their breakout music video, "Nippon Manju," went massively viral, racking up tens of millions of views almost overnight. The track perfectly blended sugar-sweet pop hooks with Ladybeard's intense, guttural metal screams.
Since then, he has continued to expand his brand through various entertainment projects:
- Deadlift Lolita: Billed as the world's first "physical fitness idol group," which he formed alongside Japanese bodybuilder and wrestler Reika Saiki.
- BABYBEARD: A pop-metal group debuted in 2021 to continue delivering his signature brand of heavy, adorable music to global audiences.
- Pro-Wrestling: He regularly steps back into the ring, using his imposing physical presence and theatrical comedy to entertain wrestling fans worldwide.
Why the Gimmick Works
While the initial draw of Ladybeard is pure visual shock value, his longevity comes down to genuine skill and charisma. He is a highly competent athlete, fluent in Japanese and Cantonese, and deeply respectful of the culture he operates within. Rather than mocking the idol industry, Ladybeard fully embraces it, spreading a message of subverting rigid gender norms and having fun doing exactly what you love.
"Sing. Dance. DESTROY!" — The official Ladybeard motto that perfectly encapsulates his blend of intense metal energy and adorable pop charm.
